Recent Work – Hackmatack Bison Farm

Last summer I had the opportunity to photograph Conor and Shelby Guptill of Hackmatack Farm, a bison farm in Berwick, ME. My goal was to get behind the public face of a farm brand, to capture the love and care they put into the food they produce, and create honest, organic lifestyle images.

The land has been in the Guptill family since the mid-1600’s and has been used for many different things. For the last 45 years, the main barn has housed a professional summer theater.

Conor started the farm as a passion project with a childhood friend as a way of getting rooted in their community after a few years of travel and graduate school. His original partner has moved on, and Shelby inherited the farm when they got married. The wedding was on the property and their first bison calf was born that morning!

Hackmatack’s bison are 100% grass-fed (they get local hay in the winter) with no hormones or antibiotics. Bison meat is similar to beef, but has about 40% less fat and also much richer in iron. It’s delicious!
